Nutella was created in the 1940s by an Italian pastry maker named Pietro Ferrero during World War II when cocoa was in short supply. He added hazelnuts to extend the chocolate supply and created a spreadable chocolate-hazelnut treat.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread the hazelnuts on a baking sheet and roast them for about 10 minutes, or until the skins start to crack.
  2. Remove the hazelnuts from the oven and let them cool slightly. Rub them in a clean kitchen towel to remove the skins.
  3. Place the roasted hazelnuts in a food processor or blender and blend until they turn into a smooth butter.
  4. Add cocoa powder, maple syrup, coconut oil, vanilla extract, and salt to the hazelnut butter. Blend again until all ingredients are well combined and the mixture is smooth and creamy.
  5. Transfer the homemade Nutella to a clean jar and store it in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
