Hazelnut-chocolate spread, also known as Nutella, was created in the 1940s in Italy during World War II when cocoa was in short supply. Hazelnuts were added to stretch the limited cocoa supply.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread the hazelnuts on a baking sheet and roast for 10 minutes.
  2. Remove the hazelnuts from the oven and let them cool. Rub the hazelnuts together to remove the skins.
  3. In a food processor, blend the hazelnuts until smooth and creamy.
  4. Melt the dark chocolate in a microwave or double boiler.
  5. Add the melted chocolate, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and salt to the food processor. Blend until well combined.
  6. Transfer the hazelnut-chocolate spread to a jar and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving.
  7. Enjoy the spread on toast, pancakes, or as a dip for fruits.
